Intro to Particle Physics¶
The following links provide a basic introduction to particle physics:
-
These are a series of 8 lectures to the general public (slides and videos) which covers the big picture about what we do and why: Compton Lectures
-
Chapters 1-4, 8 and 12 below provide more details on how particle physics works and how the Higgs was discovered. Thesis

The following is a condensed version of the above lecture series with no video: Colloquium Winter 2017
Analysis from A to Z¶
The CAT group has a very comprehensive guide about Analysis from A to Z.
Getting a LPC account¶
Follow the instructions at USCMS under "Obtaining a CMS LPC analysis cluster computing account and Fermilab accounts".
Getting a CERN (lxplus) account¶
Follow the instructions at CERN Twiki.
Setting up/Running Example Code on LPC¶
To log on to LPC (with mac or linux):
kinit username@FNAL.GOV
ssh -Y username@cmslpc-sl6.fnal.gov
To log on to LPC with windows see instructions from Stuart here: SetupSSHWindows
On the LPC, add the following line to your ~/.bash_profile file:
source /cvmfs/cms.cern.ch/cmsset_default.sh
An example package with the main HEP analysis features can be found here: Example Package
Follow the instructions in the README file.
CMS Tools and Resources¶
-
XSDB: Get the cross sections of simulated CMS datasets
-
Trigger menu with recorded luminosity information
-
CMS Data Aggregation Service (DAS): Look up information about datasets like storage locations, sizes, files
-
CINCO: Look up when/where/who for upcoming conferences and public CMS talks. Apply to give talks.
-
LHCHXSWG (LHC Higgs cross section working group): Get up to date and recommended SM Higgs cross sections and branching ratios.
-
